Buyer guide

7 Facebook Marketplace car scams in the GTA (and how to avoid them).

The tricks sellers use on Marketplace and Kijiji, and the simple checks that protect your money.

1. The deposit scam

The seller asks for an e-Transfer deposit to 'hold' a car you haven't seen. Often the car doesn't exist, or the deposit is never returned.

Never send money for a car you haven't seen in person and checked.

2. The curbsider

A curbsider is an unregistered dealer pretending to be a private seller. Signs: many cars listed, the name on the ownership doesn't match the seller, or they meet only in parking lots.

In Ontario, anyone selling cars as a business must be registered with OMVIC. Buy only from the person named on the ownership.

3. The hidden lien

The car still has a loan on it. Ask for the UVIP and check the lien section. See our guide on lien checks.

4. Cleared warning lights

Some sellers clear fault codes just before you arrive, so no warning light is on. An OBD-II scan shows readiness monitors that reveal recently cleared codes.

5. The warm engine

The engine is already warm when you arrive. A warm engine can hide hard starts, noises and smoke. Ask the seller not to start the car before you get there.

6. Rolled-back kilometres

Wear on the seats, pedals and steering wheel that doesn't match the odometer is a warning sign. History records can help confirm the mileage.

7. The rebuilt or salvage car sold as clean

A car that was written off and repaired should be branded on the UVIP. Read the brand section, and look for repainted panels and uneven gaps.
